Which HSE Course Should You Take? IOSH vs OSHA 10/30 vs ISO Lead Auditor
If you are asking which HSE course you should take, the honest answer is that it depends on your role, where you work and what you want to do next. IOSH, OSHA 10/30 and the ISO Lead Auditor course are often compared, but they do different jobs: two build safety awareness and management skills, and one qualifies you to audit management systems.
This guide sorts the options by role, explains each course, covers IOSH vs NEBOSH and OSHA 10 vs OSHA 30, and lays out HSE career courses by career stage. We deliver IOSH-approved and other accredited training at HSEQ Professionals, so we have tried to describe the options we do not deliver fairly too.

IOSH Courses: Working Safely and Managing Safely
IOSH, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, is a chartered membership body that also approves short courses. Two are widely used:
- IOSH Working Safely is for every employee and is usually a one-day course that builds basic awareness of hazards and responsibilities.
- IOSH Managing Safely is for managers and supervisors. It typically runs about three days and includes a test and a practical risk assessment.
Both are available from us in English and Arabic, and you can see all of them on our IOSH approved training page. Choose IOSH when you need practical safety knowledge for the role you already hold.
OSHA 10 vs OSHA 30
Both come from OSHA’s Outreach Training Program, delivered by OSHA-authorized trainers. The 10-hour class gives workers awareness of common job-related hazards, while the 30-hour class suits supervisors or anyone with safety responsibility and covers more topics in greater depth. The 10-hour class is typically taught over two days and the 30-hour class over five. Tracks exist for construction, general industry and maritime (OSHA).
One point is often misunderstood. The programme is voluntary, and OSHA states that the card you receive is a course completion card, not a certification or license. That does not make it worthless, since many employers and contracts ask for it, but it should be described accurately on a CV. Our OSHA 10-hour and OSHA 30-hour programmes cover construction and general industry.
IOSH vs NEBOSH
IOSH and NEBOSH are not direct rivals. IOSH is a membership body whose approved courses are short and practical. NEBOSH is an awarding body whose qualifications, such as the General Certificate and the International General Certificate, are broader and formally assessed, usually through an open-book exam and a practical risk assessment. IOSH Managing Safely is not a prerequisite for the NEBOSH General Certificate.
A simple rule works well. Choose IOSH Managing Safely if you manage people and need practical safety knowledge. Choose NEBOSH if you want a dedicated HSE career and a more substantial qualification. NEBOSH courses are taken through NEBOSH-accredited learning partners, and many people take IOSH first and NEBOSH later as their role grows.
ISO Lead Auditor Course
The ISO Lead Auditor course is a different kind of qualification. It teaches you to plan, conduct, report and follow up audits of a management system such as ISO 45001, ISO 9001 or ISO 14001. These courses typically run five days, or about 40 hours, and finish with an exam. You are expected to know the standard beforehand, often through a foundation course.
The course certificate meets the formal training requirement for CQI/IRCA auditor or lead auditor certification, though certification also has separate experience requirements. It suits HSE and quality professionals moving into auditing, consulting or certification-body work. We primarily deliver CQI-IRCA accredited courses, with selected PECB and Exemplar Global options.

How to Choose
Ask four questions before you book:
- What does my employer, client or country require? A tender or contract may name a specific course.
- Do I want to manage safety or audit it? These lead to different courses.
- Is the provider approved? Check for IOSH approval, an OSHA-authorized trainer or a CQI-IRCA certified course, depending on the course.
- What is my time and budget? A one-day course and a five-day course suit different situations.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is OSHA 30 better than OSHA 10?
Not better, just aimed at a different role. The 10-hour class is for workers and the 30-hour class is for supervisors and people with safety responsibility.
- Do I need IOSH before NEBOSH?
No. IOSH Managing Safely is not a prerequisite for the NEBOSH General Certificate, and many people go straight to NEBOSH.
- Can I take an ISO Lead Auditor course without audit experience?
Usually yes, provided you know the standard, but becoming a certified auditor with CQI/IRCA also requires experience, so check the current requirements.
